Drunk driver sentenced in crash that paralyzed man

A Buffalo man has been sentenced to a year and a half behind bars for a drunken crash that paralyzed another driver in September 2016, the Erie County District Attorney's Office says.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A Buffalo man has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison for a drunken crash that paralyzed another driver in September 2016, the Erie County District Attorney's Office says.

Kevin Reyome, 55, pleaded guilty in March to second-degree Vehicular Assault and Leaving the Scene of a Serious Injury Accident.

The crash happened Sept. 16, 2016. Reyome was driving his pickup when he hit the back of a vehicle being driven by John Reinard, 37, of Buffalo. Reinard was stopped at a red light on Harlem Road in the Town of Cheektowaga at the time. Reyome then drove away from the collision scene, but police quickly apprehended him. His blood alcohol content was measured at almost twice the legal limit, 0.14 percent.

Reinard is now paralyzed from the waist down.

Erie County Court Judge Kenneth Case, who announced the sentence, also ordered Reyome's vehicle be fitted with an ignition interlock device. Reyome must also speak about the dangers of drinking and driving on a Victim Impact Panel.
