Construction equipment, fences surround former downtown Buffalo hostel

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Construction equipment and fences were seen around the former downtown Buffalo hostel.

The hostel was shut down by the city in the spring after being deemed unsafe by building inspectors.

Inspectors said the building had electrical issues, and after further review by National Grid, personnel said the system was causing imminent danger. The sudden closure came as the agency was working to make repairs to the building.

The city had asked the hostel to vacate the building by March 25, while a stabilization of a neighboring building was being planned. The date was eventually pushed back to April 15.

In response, the people at Hostel Buffalo-Niagara said they had asked the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency to guarantee that it would be able to return to the location that it has leased for almost 30 years.
