Domestic violence victims and survivors take part in awareness walk

Participants were encouraged to wear purple, a color worn in solidarity with domestic violence victims.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and on Saturday morning, victims and survivors took part in a domestic violence walk on Buffalo's East Side.

Organizers said that abuse does not discriminate and that they want victims to know they are supported.

"Domestic violence affects everyone," Dr. Sophia McDaniel-Francis, director at the Buffalo United Resiliency Center, told 2 On Your Side at the event.

"It doesn't have respect for race, creed, socioeconomic resources, so we just wanted to involve everybody within our community to let them know that they are not alone, and we're here to stand with them."

Participants were encouraged to wear purple, a color worn in solidarity with domestic violence victims.
