CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — An already busy travel day got even busier Sunday morning due to icy conditions in Buffalo and Western New York and bad weather in other parts of the country.
As of late Sunday morning, the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport was reporting nearly two dozen flights that were cancelled or delayed. They were both arrivals and departures.
A lot of Western New Yorkers fly in and out of Toronto.
As of 10 a.m. Sunday, Toronto Pearson International Airport topped Flight Aware's list of airports with most cancellations and delays, with 67 and 80 respectively.
"The weather and icing is an issue for the air field," Airport Fire Chief Bill Major said. "It's one of the bigger challenges they have because it's hard to keep up with. They do a great job with doing that with the chemical that they put down.
"The standard procedure is to put the chemical down before it starts to ice up, and then continually work it. They also have their broom trucks and the sweepers out there, and with the plows they are moving the little bit of accumulation that's on the runways. It does cause extra work for them, but they're used to it, and they prepare for this every day."
FlightAware showed that a third of the flights in and out of Buffalo on Sunday were canceled or delayed.
In the United States, New York City-area airports, as well as Chicago, Atlanta, and Detroit were among the worst.
