'Defend the Lake' protests wind turbines on Lake Erie's shores

The rally aimed to educate local residents, and to gain support for the group's efforts.

IRVING, N.Y. — A rally to defend Lake Erie from wind turbines took place Saturday morning.

Hosted by the advocacy group Citizens Against Wind Turbines in Lake Erie, "Defend the Lake" protested any potential plan to place large wind turbines off the shore of Lake Erie. The rally aimed to educate local residents, and to gain support for the group's efforts. Several local lawmakers were also in attendance, including New York State Senator Chris Jacobs, Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello and Erie County Legislator John Mills.

Participants gathered by the lake in Irving to make waves about a plan being floated by California based Diamond Generating, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi, which could involve the installation of 50 wind turbines off the shore of the Town of Evans.

"And when I think about the idea that we are going to put literally millions and millions of pounds of concrete and steel into our water so that our governor can pretend he's doing something about climate change is just egregious," Borrello said.

A formal proposal to construct wind turbines has yet to be introduced; however, the opposition says it wants to raise their voices now to stop the concept.
