DEC provides results of Wheatfield soil sampling

WHEATFIELD, N.Y. -- The state department of environmental conservation (DEC) released soil sampling results of near the former Niagara Sanitation Landfill, which 2 On Your Side and our partners at the Investigative Post have covered extensively.

The DEC's report says while there's contamination located near the center of the landfill, no contamination from the landfill is impacting the surface of the the soil on neighboring properties, and it does not rise to a level that would lead to a full cleanup.

As soon as the validated results came in, the DEC mailed letters to homeowners with their individual soil results for chemicals detected at each property.

An attorney representing some of the neighbors told our partners at Investigative Post Tuesday that he doesn't believe the results.

Neighbors who live near the landfill filed a class action lawsuit earlier this year because of health issues.

Back in April, the DEC expanded its ongoing investigation to include surface soil testing on properties surrounding the landfill, to ensure that contamination has been contained.

The DEC will be further investigating groundwater and subsurface conditions at the site this summer, as well as digging test trenches around the perimeter of the property, to verify that no waste was placed off-site.

After the investigation, the DEC says the results will be made available for public review, and they will hold a public information session to help answer questions and address concerns about the report. No word on when that meeting might take place.
