Crash involving tractor trailer, freight train

There were no serious injuries when a tractor trailer and a freight train collided at a Dunkirk intersection Saturday evening, dispatchers say.

DUNKIRK, N.Y. -- A Cheektowaga man was injured after a freight train and tractor trailer collided at an intersection near Dunkirk Saturday evening, dispatchers say.

The accident happened just before 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Werle Road and Progressive Drive in the Town of Sheridan.

Jason M. Siepierski, 30, of Cheektowaga was the tractor trailer driver.

Siepierski was trying to head south on Werle Road, which is marked to not allow tractor trailers, before the accident, officials say. His vehicle then got stuck on the road's shoulder, causing the tractor to be on the railroad tracks.

A Norfolk Southern train was heading west on the railroad tracks when it struck the tractor trailer. The train tore the trailer apart and dragged the tractor down the railroad tracks a short distance.

The crash caused a small fire in the tractor trailer, which Chautauqua County Sheriff Deputies and other first responders were able to extinguish rather quickly, dispatchers said.

Siepierski was able to get out of the tractor before the crash. After he was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

He was also given a traffic ticket for disobeying a traffic control device.
