Code Blue issued for Buffalo on Saturday; warming shelters open

Shelters will be open to those in need of a warm place to stay.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The temperatures will be cold again on Saturday night, so a CODE BLUE has been issued for Buffalo.

The following shelters will be open overnight to those in need of a warm place to stay:

  • 586 Genesee St, Buffalo, 14204; accessible location, open 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. (This location was formerly a women's shelter but will be open to all for Code Blue.)
  • Salvation Army, 960 Main St, Buffalo, 14202; accessible location, open 8pm-8am

A daytime warming center will be open at 586 Genesee Street on Sunday, Feb. 11.

People will also be able to utilize bus tickets from the NFTA Metro between the hours of 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for transportation to shelter. People will not be allowed to wait at the NFTA though outside of the allotted NFTA Code Blue hours.

When the temperature drops below freezing or 15 degrees, it triggers one of two alerts, Code Blue 32 or Code Blue 15. Emergency situations near zero degrees or with extreme weather trigger additional response. All Code Blues, however, result in the opening of daytime warming shelters and overnight housing at two locations if not more.
