A small plane lost a wheel during a landing at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport

CHEEKTOWAGA - A small plane suffered what's described as a "hard landing" Friday afternoon at Buffalo Niagara International Airport after the craft lost a wheel.

NFTA spokesman Doug Hartmayer tells 2 On-Your-Side that the flight of the Cessna 170 originated in Canada. The plane was landing in Buffalo to clear customs which is standard procedure.

Upon landing, the plane's front left wheel came off. The pilot, who was the only person on-board, brought the plane to rest at the end of the airport's alternate runway.

Earlier reports were that the plane flipped over. That information is not correct. It appears the plane remained upright.

While there were no injuries initially reported, the pilot did go to the hospital to be checked out.

Hartmayer says given the location of where the plan came to rest, there should be no impact on traffic in or out of the airport.
