MAYVILLE, N.Y. — Dr. Mary Ann Spanos began her career in 1986 as a physical therapist specializing in geriatric rehabilitation. Since taking the lead for the Office for Aging Services, she has created initiatives focused on helping seniors remain in their homes and stay connected to their communities.

During Wednesday night's legislature meeting, Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendel Jr. presented a letter of commendation for Spanos on her retirement after more than two decades of service.

Wendel also acknowledged her national leadership as President of US Aging, advocating for seniors' needs on a broader scale. In 2022, Spanos was named a "Women of Distinction" by New York Senate.

"I thank Dr. Spanos for her unwavering service, her commitment to the well-being of our seniors, and her role as an inspiring leader in our community, and wish her all the best in retirement," Wendel said.

The county has appointed Dana Corwin as the Interim Director of the Office of Aging Services. Corwin is a registered nurse and a Mayville resident. She has worked for the department since 2008 and alongside Spanos to advocate for seniors.

“Dr. Spanos taught me not only the logistical side of running this office but also the heart behind it," Corwin said. "Her passion for helping people stay in their homes and communities is something I will carry forward.”
