CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. — Workers at the Chautauqua County Landfill reported that a small fire broke out on Monday morning around 10:45 a.m.
The fire had been from debris within the landfill and was able to be put out by crews within an hour according to Aaron Gustafson, the manager of the Chautauqua County Landfill. An exact cause has not yet been determined but Gustafson said that an improperly discarded battery could have been the source.
No injuries were reported at the incident.
"We urge all customers of the landfill to be mindful of the waste they are discarding. Prohibited materials, such as batteries, pose a significant fire risk." Gustafson emphasized.
