'Casting for Courage' fishing tournament supports kids with pediatric cancer

Ten boats will be participating in Grand Island for the 'Casting for Courage' fishing tournament. Each boat will have a captain and a kid fighting cancer.

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. — A fishing tournament called 'Casting for Courage' is returning to Western New York.

This one is to help kids fight pediatric cancer. Last year, they raised $50,000 dollars.

This year, they are looking to surpass that amount and need your help to get there.

Ten boats will be participating in Grand Island for the 'Casting for Courage' fishing tournament. Each boat will have a captain and a kid fighting cancer.

'Casting for Courage' is a fishing tournament and picnic fundraiser hosted by Anchor Marine and Catching Dreams Charter. This is a day for kids with pediatric cancer to forget about what they are going through and enjoy a day out on the water.

Captain Ned Librock is one of the organizers. He is also with Catching Dreams Charter. Captain Ned was a part of the event last year and is back again this year.

He said fishing therapy helps kids when they are in treatment and afterwards, because many times they've been isolated and alone for large amounts of times. He said its events like these that he has been able to see first-hand impact.

"It's a nice opportunity to get on the water and feel special you cant lose when you are out of fishing therapy. I still go to the grocery store and hear 'Hey captain Ned' sometimes I can't recognize them because I remember them from 7 years ago. I told a a bunch of people that I probably have more friends under 10 its been very rewarding that way," Captain Ned said.

This year, the event has become a 501-c2 charity. Organizers are hoping to continue to grow the event to make it all year round.

'Casting for Courage' fishing tournament is on August 24 at Anchor Marine on Grand Island.

The tournament starts at 8 a.m. and following the tournament, there will be games, food and music for families and friends to enjoy. There is still sponsor opportunities and tickets on sale.
