Canisius University receives grant to recruit students interested in teaching

Two-three credit college courses and internship opportunities will be offered through Canisius University for high school students interested in becoming educators.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius University's School of Education and Human Services has just received a one-year grant to expand its teacher pipeline through the Grow Your Own Teacher Program.

The funding comes from the Cullen Foundation of Western New York Inc. and will be used to expand university partnerships with the Tapestry Charter School and Buffalo Academy of Science- introducing high school students to a career path in the teaching profession.

Two three-credit college courses will be made available through the grant for high school juniors and seniors: Exploring the Teaching Profession and Human Growth and Development - Birth through Childhood.

The grant supports on-site internships for high schoolers in addition to coursework, where students will work alongside a mentor-teacher in elementary and middle schools.

The School of Education and Human Services' dean, Nancy Wallace, expressed her appreciation and gratitude after receiving the grant in a release.

"By cultivating a diverse cohort of aspiring educators and transitioning them into a teacher preparation program, Canisius can help ensure that future educators are not only well-prepared academically but deeply committed to serving the next generation of students," Wallace said.
