Batavia Fire Department responds to large commercial building fire

The City of Batavia Fire responded to a 3-alarm fire on Howard Street.

BATAVIA, N.Y. — A building is completely destroyed after a fire in the City of Batavia on Saturday morning.

The City of Batavia Fire Department responded around 7:45 a.m. Saturday to 20 Howard Street for a building on fire. Flames and black smoke could be seen from miles away.

Additional resources were sent to contain the fire, and several crews were on the 3-alarm scene. The fire did not spread to neighboring buildings, city officials said.

"As crews arrived, the structure was fully engulfed with flames and a large plume of smoke was showing. Crews have been fighting the fire all day and were successful in containment," City Manager Rachael Tabelski and Fire Chief Josh Graham said in a statement late Saturday afternoon.

The large commercial and manufacturing building, owned by Baskin Livestock, is a total loss, according to officials.

There are no reports of injuries and no one was inside at the time.

"Material in the facility has been confirmed to be food products," city officials said.

Officials added that 1 million gallons of water were added to the system Saturday morning to battle the flames.

City officials said people will be securing and monitoring the scene overnight. Howard Street remains closed at this time.

"Initial investigation into the cause of the fire has begun, and will continue in the following days. Crews will return to the fire in the morning to continue fire suppression, overhaul activities and investigation efforts," city officials said, adding that a full news release will be issued Sunday.
