BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Police have charged a North Carolina man after a wrong-way crash on the 33 Eastbound Sunday morning.
The two-car crash happened just after 2:30 a.m. near the Best Street exit and forced the closure of the expressway for several hours.
According to accident investigators, a Ford Edge driving on the wrong side of the 33 struck another vehicle head-on.
The vehicle that was struck, a white SUV, ended up teetering over the middle barrier of the expressway with a crumpled hood and front end.
Buffalo Police say the driver of the white SUV, a 25-year-old Cheektowaga man, was transported by ambulance to ECMC where he was taken into surgery to be treated for multiple injuries.

An update regarding his condition has not been provided.
After the crash, a 43-year-old male from North Carolina was arrested and charged with DWI, vehicular assault, and other charges according to a Buffalo Police spokesperson.
The name of the wrong-way driver has not been released but police say he was not injured in the crash.
The 33 reopened to traffic a few hours after the scene was cleared.
