Meanwhile, Ralph Wilson Park will be closed to the public, from 10 p.m. Saturday until the next morning.
The New York State Thruway Authority announced Sunday morning that demolition of the old bridge was taking longer than expected but it was officially reopened at 11:30 a.m.
SOUTHBOUND DETOUR:
The southbound detour will divert traffic from the 1-190 at exit 9, Porter Avenue. Follow Porter Avenue until turning right on Niagara Street. Continue on Niagara Street and re-enter I-190 at the Virginia Street on-ramp.
NORTHBOUND DETOUR:
The northbound detour will divert traffic from the 1-190 at exit 8, Virginia Street. Turn Left on Niagara Street and continue until Porter Avenue. Turn left on Porter Avenue and re-enter the I-190 at the Porter Street on-ramp.
The new pedestrian bridge was built in Italy in 4 sections, before arriving in Buffalo in July. Crews have spent the past few months assembling the pieces ahead of this weekend's installation.
