Students keep local veterans memories alive

It doesn't have to be Veteran's Day to preserve and share military stories. At the Bilingual Center School 33, students are setting out to learn about local Vets.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — It doesn't have to be Veteran's Day to preserve and share military stories. At the Bilingual Center School 33, 8th graders are setting out to learn more about local Veterans.

The 8th graders home language arts students in the Buffalo Public School district, are completing an advanced project to develop an understanding to the United States Armed Services. To help students achieve this, local veterans were invited to come to their schools to have an one-on-one conversation with the students.

Veterans brought their wisdom, stories, photographs and medals to help students better understand the value and their roles. As a sign of appreciation for their service, and participating in this project, Veterans are welcomed back to the school again on November 8th, so students can celebrate them and honor them at their annual veterans' luncheon.

"We get to see the twinkle in the eyes of the students. We get to be able to just talk and let people know how we felt, how we feel. We have the opportunity to have all the youth wave the flags and salute and play this song, 'We Honor You.' It's a tear jerker. It is something that you never forget," Debbera Random, a Vietnam Veteran.

Students will create posters and share their research with the veterans when they come back.

This includes knowledge they learned about the branches of services, the knowledge they gained from the interview process and they'll also share their reflections about the sacrifices, commitment and impacts all the Veterans made to our country.
