BUFFALO, N.Y. — It's the first day of school again for many districts across Western New York. It's also the first day of school for Western New York's largest district, the Buffalo Public Schools. The BPS superintendent traveled across the district in a school bus herself to get students excited for the new school year.
A total of 462 school buses rolled out this morning filled with Buffalo Public School students and the district's superintendent and other school and city leaders came out on another bus to tour schools and welcome back students, teachers, and staff to another school year.
This is the second year in a row that the district has had all of its routes covered. The superintendent Doctor Tonja Williams Knight credits First Student, school leaders, and others to make sure students will be at school on time this morning.
She said there is nothing more important than school and their students. Safety, security, and academic achievement are the district's top priorities this year.
"Happy New Year. Buffalo Public Schools has started a new exciting school new year and we are super excited," Doctor Williams Knight said.
Doctor Williams Knight also talked about school safety and the school shooting in Georgia that happened on August 4th. She said she would like to remind parents to talk to their kids. She would also like for the students, to reach out to a trusted adult if they need help.
