Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight takes 53 veterans to Washington, D.C.

A total 53 World War II and Korean war veterans met Saturday at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — The first Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight of the year took place Saturday morning.

A total 53 World War II and Korean war veterans met on Saturday morning at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. They then boarded a flight to Washington, where they explored the memorials in the nation's capital.

Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight is a non-profit organization that flies World War II, Korea, and Vietnam war veterans, free of cost, to Washington to see the memorials erected in honor of their service.

Veterans who took the trip come from the Buffalo area, Jamestown, Olean, Bradford, Pennsylvania, and southern Ontario. A guardian accompanied each of the veterans.

The send-off ceremony happened at 6:45 a.m. The group was expected to return to the Buffalo airport at 10:45 p.m. Saturday.

The flight was sponsored by M&T Bank and the Buffalo Bills Foundation. Bills cornerbacks Levi Wallace and Taron Johnson were among the people who accompanied the group to Washington.
