House owners in Buffalo receive free repairs

This week, a volunteer group is providing 100 Ellicott District families with free home repair services

BUFFALO, N.Y. — This week, hope is hard at work in the Ellicott district.

“They’re re-doing the ceiling, the bathroom really needed to be done”

John Kingcade is getting a new bathroom and a new kitchen. The cost of such a big project? Not a single penny.

“We are doing free home repairs for 100 families. So, we're doing anything from roofing projects, exterior paint projects, porch repairs, flooring, landscaping, so many things in between. We’re even doing a community project at JFK Park” said Kim Lackey, director of Eight Days of Hope, Buffalo.

Eight Days of Hope, a faith based non-profit, is in its fifth year of providing families in the Buffalo area with free home repairs.

David Medley is another lucky Ellicott homeowner

“It felt like home before. For but with the assistance of John and the rest of the crew from Eight Days of Hope, it's going to really feel like home now,” said Medley.

John Himes, a volunteer with the organization, had never met David until this week. What strikes him most, he says: David’s humility.

“We're going to give him a new bathroom this week. We totally gutted it, new plumbing, electrical. We're putting sheetrock up today,” said Himes.

Once the walls are up, the crew is gone. But the gratitude is sure to last for years to come

“There’s nothing you can really do to say thank you” said Kingcade

The community service event began last Saturday and will go until this coming Saturday.

If you missed out on this year’s home repair, applications for the week-long volunteer event are typically released on the Eight Days of Hope website every spring.
