BUFFALO, N.Y. — When the A&E Network came calling last year to invite Mister Sizzle’s to film an episode of a new show, owner Casey Casas said, she was all in.
The network spent a day at the Connecticut Street restaurant last year, documenting the creation of the Buffalo restaurant’s Melted Hen: buttermilk fried chicken, ranch, lettuce and tomato served between two brioche grilled cheese sandwiches.
The segment aired Sept. 24 on "Best of Chow," a competition show that included six Buffalo restaurant competing in three categories, with Allentown Pizza beating the Place in the first-round savory category; Mister Sizzle’s besting Fat Bob’s Smokehouse in the wild card second round; and the Cereal Spot falling to V/ice in the third-round sweet category.
The program ended up airing at 8:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, but Casas says several customers have come in asking about the Melted Hen after seeing the show.
Exposure and awareness are a big benefit of making it to the small screen, making winning or losing less important, says KC Mullett, owner of V/ice, a whiskey/wine bar and restaurant at 500 Pearl St.
