City of Buffalo officials talk about snow removal ahead of messy Wednesday morning commute

City of Buffalo officials provided an update on road conditions and snow removal around 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — City of Buffalo officials provided updates on snow removal ahead of the city's first lake effect snow event of the season.

Department of Public Works commissioner Nate Marton, detailed plans for cleanup at a news conference at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, ahead of an anticipated messy morning commute. Earlier in the morning, crews began pre-salting main and secondary roads, especially in South Buffalo.

"Take some time this morning. This is the adjustment we will all have with this first snowfall. Roads will be slick. Snow will be coming down, and visibility will be affected. Give yourself extra time. Give yourself extra space between you and the car in front of you. Allow for that stoppage and slippery roads," Marton said.

The City of Buffalo has about 3,000 tons of salt on hand at the Broadway garage and additional salt stored off-site. The DPW has a total fleet of 50 — 36 plows and 14 front end loaders.

A Winter Weather Advisory went into effect for northern Erie county at 4:00 a.m. and is expected to last until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. One to three inches of snow is expected to fall during the morning commute.

City officials are urging drivers to use caution and be ready for slick travel conditions and reduced visibility.
