The 20th annual Boxes of Love event drew a crowd of more than 400 people. Pastor Eric Johns began the project to serve families in the Buffalo area who wouldn't have the means to buy toys for the children during the holidays.
Saturday, hundreds of people received toys, clothes, and food to help get them through the season.
To help with the effort, more than 1,000 volunteers collected and counted donations throughout the months of November and December to get them ready for distribution.
"Really, I think it's a statement about Buffalo. We can't do it on our own at the Buffalo Dream Center we really need other volunteers," Pastor Johns told 2 On Your Side.
Johns' efforts to bring awareness to the needs of people in the community is kicked off in November when he spends the week of Thanksgiving on the streets. He says he hopes his actions will prompt the community to continue giving to those in need.
"I think it's exciting to see everybody pull together to make a difference like this."
