HAMBURG. NY — The Erie County Sheriff's Office is investigating a body that was found in Lake Erie Wednesday night.

Jet skiers discovered the body about 1.5 miles off of Woodlawn Beach. The Sheriff's Marine Unit was dispatched to recover it at about 6:40 p.m.

The individual appears to be a white male with some facial hair, but "due to advanced decomposition, no other discerning marks or features were visible," according to the Sheriff's Office.

The man was wearing a black, possibly leather jacket, jeans and socks. The clothing was deteriorated and falling apart.

Deputies took the body to the Buffalo Coast Guard station where detectives, investigators and a medical examiner attempted to find identification on the man, to no avail.

The Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
