Boaters rescued as cabin cruiser starts to take on water

Incident happened Sunday night on Chautauqua Lake in the Town of Ellery

MAYVILLE, N.Y. — A scary situation on Lake Chautauqua Sunday night as the Sheriff's office got a call about a disabled boat taking on water.

The department's navigation division responded to the area about 1/2 mile from shore near the I-86 overlook in the Town of Ellery. They found the boat had sunk with the bow of the boat sticking out of the water. The occupants of the 28-foot cabin cruiser were taken to shore by a passing boat.

On Monday morning, the Chautauqua County Hazmat team and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Spill Response Team placed booms around the sunken vessel to collect any fluids that may leak into the water.

The Sheriff's Office is advising boaters to be careful in that area until an attempt to recover the boat is made sometime Tuesday, depending on the weather.
