BUFFALO, N.Y. — Monday marked the 54th anniversary of Bangladesh earning its independence. To celebrate the country's Victory Day, the Bangladeshi flag was raised at Niagara Square.
People, city leaders, and former freedom fighters gathered downtown to honor the special day.
"Each and everyone in our community, I thank you very much for celebrating our victory day," Mohammed Osman Shimul International Institute of Buffalo President & CEO of Fortunes America Properties LLC said. "And we want to honor today to our freedom fighters, and all of our brothers and sisters here."
The Victory Day remembers the nine-month Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971 which ended in East Pakistan’s succession to become the new country of Bangladesh.
