BATAVIA, N.Y. —The suspect in the stabbing of Batavia high school star football player was back in court on Monday.
Police say the victim, Ray Leach, 18, was transported to Strong Memorial in Rochester with a hand laceration after the Saturday afternoon incident and was treated and released. The stabbing occurred at his home at 153 Ross Street.
Leach told police the person who attacked him was his neighbor and classmate, Antwan Odom. He said it happened after he accused Odom of stealing some personal property from him.
Odom had taken off from the scene by the time police arrived. He was arrested at his house a short time later and taken to United Memorial Medical Center for treatment. He's been charged with attempted assault and weapons possession.
In court on Monday it was revealed that Odom has another felony case pending in the Town of Sweden. He was arrested in April on the SUNY Brockport campus and charged with aggravated DWI with children under 16 in the car and driving while impaired by drugs. As a result, the Genesee Co. DA's office requested and was granted an increase in bail from $15,000 cash or $30,000 property to $50,000 cash or $100,000 property. Odom's family appeared in court with him, but declined any comment. He is being represented by a public defender.
Ray Leach, Batavia High School's star running back, is reported to be back home Sunday morning. Leach was the MVP of the Section V Class B finals in 2017.
Leach helped the Blue Devils win sectional titles in 2015 and 2016 and helped lead them to the cusp of a fourth straight title in 2017. He scored 28 touchdowns while running 1,888 yards for the Blue Devils.
“He definitely has a talent," Batavia coach Brennan Briggs said of the returning AGR selection. "He can get into open spaces and into the end zone.’’
