One person killed in Amherst shooting near elementary school

Amherst Police have confirmed that at least one person was killed in a shooting Thursday night.

AMHERST, N.Y. — Amherst Police say a 31-year-old male was killed Thursday night in a shooting on Springville Avenue, between Oxford Avenue and Cambridge Boulevard. The scene is a block away from Windermere Boulevard Elementary School.

Police say they began receiving calls about the shooting at 10:17 p.m. and responding officers found the male victim.

Police have identified the victim as James Booker III.  He was a resident of a home on Springville Avenue.

Amherst Police Captain Chris Meyer says, "At this time we can say that there’s no immediate danger, or no known danger to anyone in this area. The investigation is going to be ongoing. It’s in its very early stages at this point. And people in this are can expect to see police presence, our investigators are going to be here throughout the day."
