LACKAWANNA, N.Y. — Four years ago to the day, a massive industrial fire erupted at the old Bethlehem Steel plant in Lackawanna.
Smoke and flames could be seen for miles.
Progress is moving slowly to redevelop the area, but the last piece of structural steel was raised on a new manufacturing facility located on the former Bethlehem Steel site on Route 5 in Lackawanna over the summer.
When finished, the 29,000 square foot TMP manufacturing plant will employ more than 120 new and retained full time workers. The $22 million project is also employing 100 construction workers.
Millions of dollars have already been spent on cleanup, and there will need to be millions more for a full recovery.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in October that under a Consent Order with the New York State DEC, Tecumseh Redevelopment, Inc. and its parent corporation, ArcelorMittal USA, are responsible for a comprehensive cleanup estimated to cost at least $35 million at the former site of Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna.
