Amherst Police welcome a cuddly K-9 to its ranks

A 12-week-old Labrador Retriever was recently added to the police force. But he won't be sniffing around drug busts, or tracking down suspects at crime scenes.

AMHERST, N.Y. — There's a new canine on the Amherst Police Department, but it's not what you might think.

The department recently welcomed Manny, a 12-week-old Labrador Retriever, to its ranks. He won't be sniffing around drug busts or attempting to track down suspects at crime scenes.

Manny won't be doing any of that in his official role as community engagement and support canine, essentially serving as an ambassador of goodwill and compassion.

"Once fully trained, Manny will be actively involved in the community, giving citizens plenty of opportunities to meet him and helping to create positive and meaningful connections," Amherst Police said in a statement, announcing the new position.

Manny will comfort crime victims and provide emotional support to people who need it. He will also be there to comfort anyone in the Amherst Police Department going through emotional or traumatic experiences.

Manny is named after Captain Bruce Mann, who died unexpectedly in February of 2023. Captain Mann was a former K-9 handler for Amherst Police.

"Naming Manny after him is a tribute to his dedication and service," police said.

The Devin Waring Foundation provided a "generous donation" that led Manny to Amherst. The Devin Waring Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that raises awareness about issues officers constantly face.

"Their mission is to provide education and support for schools and community programs aimed at mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The foundation’s mission to promote emotional well-being and community resilience through the support of therapy animals aligns perfectly with Manny’s purpose within our community," Amherst Police said.
