BUFFALO, NY-- A WNY soldier wounded in the 2014 shooting at Ft. Hood Texas, is returning to New York to live and work this summer.
Major Patrick Miller, who is from Allegany, was wounded on that April day in 2014. At the time, he was acting as a Brigade Comptroller/S8 for the 1st Medical Brigade in Fort Hood.
It was the end of his workday when he heard shots fired outside his office. He ran into the hallway and saw a man who he thought was looking for safety, but instead was the gunman. The man shot Miller two-inches below his heart. The bullet tore through his colon and smashed a rib.
For his valor for the actions he took that day, Major Miller was awarded the Soldier's Medal, the highest non-combat honor awarded in the Army.
Speaking from Hawaii, where he's been stationed for the past three years, Maj. Miller tells 2 On Your Side his next assignment will be as the Deputy Commander for Administration at Ft. Drum in Watertown as part of the U.S. Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC).
Major Miller, his wife and 18 month old daughter Harper, are looking forward to coming home and being closer to family and friends for the first time in many years.
Miller said one of the first things he expects to do on his return to WNY is buy Bills' season tickets. He is also looking forward to hosting the 2nd annual Southern Tier Wounded Warrior concert back in his hometown of Allegany this July.
