NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. — The Niagara County Clerk's Office is reminding those in the community to be aware of an E-ZPass scam that is going around.
Recently E-ZPass users are being targeted with fake text messages to persuade them to enter in personal/financial information on a phony website.
“This is like so many other scams where the goal is to try to acquire as much of your personal information as possible,” said Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski. “The text message that is sent out looks official and has fooled many people.”
Legitimate communication for NY E-ZPass Toll Services will only ever refer customers to their official websites which are www.e-zpassny.com and www.tollsbymailny.com.
“It’s always important to know that legitimate government agencies will never ask for customer’s date of birth, social security number or other personally identifiable information in an unsolicited text message,” said Jastrzemski. “Always remember that if you are unsure about any text or email you receive, you should call the agency directly.”
