Town of Tonawanda to offer emergency alert system to residents

Residents can register through the CivicPlus Mass Notification System to receive the emergency alerts and messages.

TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. — The Town of Tonawanda has a new way to reach residents in the event of an emergency.

During his State of the Town address, Town Supervisor Joe Emminger announced they will be starting Town of Tonawanda Alerts.  It's a mass notification system that will send emergency alerts and other important notifications to residents that subscribe.

“The system is for emergency and non-emergency alerts,” Emminger said. “The alerts could be related to specific hazards that require some kind of action to be taken such as evacuation or shelter in place. Non-emergency alerts could include significant transportation problems with prolonged impacts or significant ongoing police or fire activity.”

Residents can register through the CivicPlus Mass Notification System to receive the emergency alerts and messages through either phones calls, text messages or email.

Messages that will be sent include severe weather alerts, notifications from the police department, highway department, water and sewer and general town alerts. They alerts can even be targets to specific neighborhoods within the town that would be impacted.

Residents can register for the Town of Tonawanda Alerts http://tinyurl.com/TonawandaAlerts.  You can also register by text messaging by  texting TownofTonawanada to 38276.  There is also an app that you can register either on Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Those that subscribe will be asked to provide their address and preferred method of contact.  The program is free of charge, but standard text messaging rates and other charges may apply.
