BUFFALO, NY -- Thanks to a major gift from two of Buffalo's leading corporations, the proposed African American Veterans Monument is one step closer to reality.
Delaware North, along with M&T bank, announced on Friday a joint gift for the project of $200,000. The grant brings the fundraising to 85% of the needed $1.5 million goal.
Since January 2017, the African American Veterans Monument Committee has been working to secure funding for the first-of-its kind monument. It will be the first in the nation dedicated solely to African-American veterans and service members.
Ground was broken at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park in November. When complete, there will be 12 ten-foot tall black concrete pillars representing each of the country's military conflicts. Weather permitting, it's hoped construction will wrap up by next summer.
You can honor a veteran and help inch the fundraising closer by purchasing an engraved brick paver for $250.The pavers will line the walkways of the monument.
