On the eve of his retirement, 97 Rock's Larry Norton reflects on 4 decades on the radio in Buffalo.
97 Rock's Larry Norton reflects on 40 years behind the microphone.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - It all started in the old WYSL/WPHD studios back in 1975, when a 19-year-old Larry Norton went on the air for the first time. Little did he, or the listeners, know that it would be the beginning of an era. 40 years later the Norton era is about to reach its sunset. When his show ends Friday morning, Larry Norton will hang up his headphones, switch off the mic, and call it a career.

Larry's fame grew in the early 80's as he became known for his crazy stunts, one of the most memorable was his nearly 40 days on the ferris wheel at Darien Lake. But Larry is most proud when he thinks about the beneficiaries of those stunts, a wide variety of Western New York charities, Make-A-Wish, most notably. Each of those stunts, whether it was riding a water slide for a full weekend, or being frozen in a block of ice for 48 hours, every stunt raised money for charity.

Larry plans to continue his charitable work and become more involved in his church.
