ALBANY — New Yorkers love to argue about where upstate and downstate begin and end.

That point was reinforced yet again by the response to a New York Times Magazine interview of Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Cynthia Nixon, who said — jokingly, her campaign says — that upstate begins around Ithaca.

The social-media chatter confirmed what a 2016 public opinion poll found: Hardly anyone agrees where upstate begins.
