BUFFALO, N.Y. — It was on this day, Sept. 14, 1901, President William McKinley died in Buffalo from gunshot wounds inflicted by an assassin eight days prior.
The shooting happened during the Pan American Exposition on September 6, 1901. McKinley died on September 14, 1901. The shooter, Leon Czolgosz, was convicted of murder and later executed.
Then, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him, becoming the youngest-ever U.S. president at age 42. Roosevelt took the oath of office that same day McKinley died at the Wilcox Mansion in Buffalo.
That site is now known as the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site.
On Friday, students from Canisius High School and members of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site laid a memorial wreath and unveiled a newly restored historic marker at the site where McKinley was shot.
