News 2 You: Ride sharing comes to Buffalo, an infamous case of corporal punishment, a disappointing solar eclipse

BUFFALO, N.Y. — 10 years ago this week:

There was a new way to get around in Buffalo as Lyft, with its pink mustache adorned vehicles, began operating its ridesharing service.  

Whole Foods announced plans to come to Western New York.

The Bills used their first pick in the NFL draft on Sammy Watkins and UB's Khali Mack went one pick later to the Oakland Raiders this week in 2014.

20 years ago this week:

US Rep. Brian Higgins, who retired in early 2024, launched his first run for congress.

Questions were being raised on capitol hill regarding the treatment of Iraqi POWs after photos surfaced of them being posed in humiliating fashion inside Abu Ghraib prison.

Watch parties were held in Buffalo and across the country as fans of the NBC television sitcom Friends gathered to watch the final episode of the popular show 
which aired this week in 2004.

30 years ago this week:

An 18 year old American suddenly became a household name when he was sentenced to be caned for vandalizing cars in Singapore in a case that sparked much discussion and debate over corporal punishment.

Despite the attempted intervention of US officials the sentence was carried out, although it was reduced from six lashes to four.

The Chunnel opened beneath the English Channel connecting Great Britain and France by rail. 

By just two votes the US House of representatives passed the controversial "assault weapons" ban. However, the measure had a sunset clause after ten years, and efforts to restore it since have failed. In the meantime, several states have adopted their own measures restricting the sale and use of certain types of firearms.

Paula Jones filed her sexual harassment suit against President Clinton in which she claimed that Clinton, prior to becoming President, not only made unwanted sexual advances toward her but had also defamed her when he denied doing so and called her claims "pathetic".

Clinton would eventually pay her $850,000 to settle the lawsuit.

Buffalo found itself in the direct path of an annular eclipse. Just as in the recent case of the total solar eclipse people were quite excited to see it. However, similar to what occurred in the 2024 total eclipse and the one that occurred in 1925, clouds moved in to obscure the view of the event this week in 1994.
