A look back at Billy Ogden's and better days for Bills fans

Recalling when these stories and more were all News 2 You.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — 2 On Your Side's Dave McKinley takes a look back at the stories that made history in WNY when it was News 2 You.

10 years ago this week:

The NFTA adopted a new rule banning vaping on metro busses.

Chris Manhertz was starring on the hard court as a forward for the Canisius College Golden Griffins basketball team. This week's News 2 You Pop Quiz: What pro team does Manhertz currently play for? (for the answer watch the conclusion of the video attached to this story).

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who often claimed to be a governor for all New Yorkers,  made his infamous remark about how there was no place for conservatives in the state.

Among the many speaking out about Cuomo's remark was Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone who said, "he is speaking of extremism and I think that comment is is the best example of extremism I've heard for a long time."

That same week Cuomo introduced what was then a record high state budget of $137 billion.

Ten years later, the budget recently proposed by his successor Kathy Hochul of $233 billion reflects a nearly 60% increase in state spending in just the last decade since this week in 2014.

America was in the midst of a carb counting craze. From Atkins to South Beach it was a diet revolution and marketers who study diet trends said at the time they hadn't seen anything like this one in decades.

Hundreds of low carb foods were being introduced, including when Burger King began offering a Whopper with just the meat and no bun.

Former Buffalo radio personality Jack Paar, who went on to host the Tonight show, died at the age of 85.  We also lost Bob Keeshan, who was Buffalo Bob Smith's sidekick Clarabelle the Clown, before becoming known to generations of children as Captain Kangaroo.

Locally, Western New York mourned the sudden passing at just age 52 of beloved restaurateur Andy DiVincenzo, who was the chief cook and owner of Billy Ogden's.

The restaurant on William Street was a dining landmark known for its giant black board upon which the menu and daily specials were written. DiVincenzo was described as a pillar of the Lovejoy community, known as much for his many acts of charity and kindness as he was for his signature stuffed hot peppers.

The words "we're back, deal with it America!" became the clarion call for Buffalo Bills backers, after their team won another AFC championship and earned their fourth straight birth in the Super Bowl.

The Bills defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in the title game played before a sellout crowd at Rich Stadium in which Chiefs Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana was concussed and didn't finish.

To celebrate National Meat Week, local producers of deli meats donated products for a 300' long submarine sandwich which was built inside the NFTA Metro Rail barn on Ohio Street.

Once assembled the giant sandwich, which was slightly longer than a football field, was cut up and donated to Buffalo City Mission.
