News 2 You: Remembering a new place for Buffalo to shop, the $5 haircut, and television like we'd never seen it before

Looking back to a time when those stories, and more, were all News 2 You.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ten years ago this week:

The Buffalo Sabres selected Sam Reinhart with the second overall pick of the NHL draft. Reinhart, a center, currently plays with the Florida Panthers. 

That same week, one of the greatest players in the team's history, Dominik Hasek, was elected to the hockey Hall of Fame.

Thousands gathered at Canalside at outdoor watch parties for soccer's World Cup,  the Frank Lloyd Wright filling station opened at the Peirce Arrow Museum, and  US Army Major Patrick Miller, who was wounded while saving others in the Fort Hood shootings months earlier, returned home to Western New York and a heroes welcome.

The US Supreme Court ruled the in the "Hobby Lobby" case that certain private businesses did not have to provide free birth control as part of employee health care coverage, and the American Bar Association determined it was ethical for lawyers picking jurors to learn more about them by trolling their social media pages this week in 2014.

20 years ago this week:

Having ceded their convention center to the Seneca for use as a casino, Governor Pataki joined Niagara Falls officials to cut the ribbon on their new, smaller conference center.

Buffalo's Gus Macker tournament, with over 1000 teams,still stood as one of the largest three on three basketball tournaments in the nation.

Katie Couric was named to the TV hall of fame and we began hearing that Ron Burgandy was "kind of a big deal" when the movie Anchorman premiered this week in 2004.

30 years ago this week:

Movie goers flocked with children in tow to see The Lion King when the animated feature premiered at theaters. The animated feature went on  to become the year's top grossing film. 

In his second year as President, Bill Clinton appointed a new Whitehouse Chief of Staff, who is the subject of this week's this News 2 You Pop Quiz (for the answer watch the conclusion of the video attached to this story).

UB Stadium still had a natural grass field, Lambchop was popular among kids, and Buffalo city lawmakers were debating regulations for adult book stores.

Marshalls became the latest retailer to come to Western New York when it opened its first three outlets locally, and Charlie the Barber was offering $5 haircuts during Bisons games at Pilot Field this week in 1994.

70 years ago this week:

Television had been around for a while but was undergoing a monumental change when   programs began coming into your living room in color in 1954, when it was all News 2 You.
