BUFFALO, N.Y. — 10 years ago this week:
Super Flea, a beacon for generations of bargain hunters, closed after the property at 2500 Walden Avenue was sold for redevelopment. It is the site today of a Walmart superstore.
Seeking a second term, NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Kathy Hochul would be his running mate. Hochul would eventually become governor when Cuomo resigned amid a sex harassment scandal seven years later and still serves as governor today.
And as it does every year, Merriam Webster was adding new words to its dictionary. "selfie" and "hashtag" were among the new inclusions this week in 2014.
20 years ago this week:
Among some new trends were prom attire made of duct tape, people riding roller coasters naked, and a push for a new form of governance locally as civic leaders were thinking long and hard about merging the City of Buffalo with Erie County, as both faced fiscal deficits.
The idea of metro government has surfaced periodically since then but has never gained ground.
The lights went out on the Red Star when the parent company of that trucking business, whose rigs were once ubiquitous on Western New York roadways, shut it down leaving hundreds out of jobs.
Shrek II opened at theaters this week in 2004.
30 years ago this week:
Sunshine's Market, a family owned grocery store, was still operating on Hertel Ave. near Parkside. Later, it was demolished to make way for a Walgreens.
Plans were announced for Amherst to get its first Walmart store.
Buffalo City Honors student Clarissa Markiewicz won the grand prize in a national lyrics writing competition sponsored by a major recording star where the prize included a free concert at her school.
The musician, who is the subject of this week's News 2 You pop quiz, performed live before delighted students this week in 1994 (to found out who it was watch the conclusion of the video attached to this story). Markiewicz continued writing and became a novelist.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, former First Lady of the United States, died from cancer at age 64. She was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery next to her first husband, President John F. Kennedy.
40 years ago this week:
Preparations were underway for the reopening of Crystal Beach Amusement Park after new investors spent $1 million to purchase the property from receivership and renovate park.
The expenses necessitated a doubling in ticket prices, however, from $1 to $2 Canadian.
Crystal Beach closed for good five years later.
