Original Red Cross location celebrates reopening

Dansville, located south of Rochester, celebrated the site's grand reopening on Saturday.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton in 1881. That year on August 22, Barton established the first ever Red Cross location at 57 Elizabeth Street in the Village of Dansville.

Dansville, located south of Rochester, celebrated the site's grand reopening on Saturday.

In a news release, a list of renovations was shared:

  • UV film installation to protect the interior;
  • electrical and security upgrades;
  • iInterior & exterior structural repair and foundation pointing;
  • exterior wall repair and full exterior scrape and paint;
  • full window restoration;
  • original hardwood floors circa 1840 repair and refinishing with custom matching stain;
  • and wall repairs and repainting in parlor, dining room, library, and second-floor conference room.

This historic site can be visited year round with an exception of Sundays and holidays. Free tours are available upon request.

The Clara Barton Chapter #1 building still serves as a meeting place for volunteers and staff of the Red Cross, and a museum of Red Cross history. 

Historic artifacts are on display from the Civil War, and Clara Barton's life.
