BUFFALO, N.Y. — University at Buffalo researchers are going to be taking a closer look at health issues on Buffalo's East Side.
Specifically, they will be looking at why there are higher rates of serious, chronic and preventable diseases there, and why mortality rates are higher as well.
The goal is to find ways to fix problems, such as the lack of access to health care and healthy food, to bring those rates down.
"The resurgence of this region cannot be limited by new buildings, economic opportunities for the wealthy, and even the expansion of this fine institution. True resurgence will be when we have successfully addressed the problem of health disparities," according to the Rev. George Nicholas of the African-American Health Disparities Task Force.
Faculty from 10 schools at UB will work together with community partners on the Community Health Equity Research Institute.
