'Give Kids a Smile' event teaches kids about dental hygiene, offers oral health services

An event for National Children's Dental Health Month teaches kids about oral hygiene.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — With February marking National Children's Dental Health month, University at Buffalo and SUNY Erie Community College dental students teamed up to teach kids about oral hygiene.

On Monday, hundreds of children came to the "Give Kids a Smile" event at the Buffalo History Museum to receive dental health services and learn how to stay healthy.

This year's event coordinator, Meelin Dian Chin Kit-Wells, says the program provides a "fun, non-threatening space for kids to absorb preventative oral health lessons and receive services."

According to Chin Kit-Wells, the event gave UB and SUNY Erie dental students hands-on experience as they provided kids with cavity screening and fluoride treatment.

"This program provides such a service to our community and also prepares our students to work with children of all ages and abilities," Chin Kit-Wells said.

Kids at the event learned how to properly brush and floss and could take part in interactive activities such as a scavenger hunt, dental workshop and story time.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown also made an appearance at the event, addressing the audience about dental health.

The American Dental Health Association Sponsors the "Give Kids a Smile" event every February.
