Annual event helps raise money and awareness during Suicide Prevention Month

Out of the Darkness walks are organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in hundreds of cities across the country.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — September is Suicide Prevention Month, and on Saturday morning, hundreds of people gathered at Canalside for the Out of the Darkness Walk.

The annual event helps raise money and awareness for the issue.

"Maybe they've lost a cousin, brother, parent, friend, and I think the big message is that everybody is impacted by mental health," Lauren Calabrese, the chair of Out of the Darkness Walk, told 2 On Your Side.

"We all have a brain, right, brain health is so important, just as important as physical health. We really want to encourage positive conversations around mental health."

Out of the Darkness walks are organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in hundreds of cities across the country.
