Hochul says more must be done concerning Black maternal health

Hochul spoke about her administration's policy agenda for Black communities throughout the state.

NEW YORK — Gov. Kathy Hochul was in New York City on Saturday for the first rally of Black History Month.

The governor was invited to the House of Justice in Harlem to speak on her administration's policy agenda for black communities throughout the state.

During her remarks, Governor Hochul praised the activists of the past and thanked those helping to push the movement forward.

While also acknowledging that there is still more work to be done such as Black maternal health.

"The fact that more babies and moms are dying in Black communities than at a higher rate than any other population what is going on here when women are afraid to get pregnant because it might be a death sentence for them, we have to stop that and in my budget, I announced more programs, more funding, more effort to say these women and babies deserve to live"

The governor's appearance follows the historic enactment of racial justice legislation that will pave the way for the establishment of a committee tasked with considering reparations for slavery.
