New life-saving medical device given to Genesee County volunteer fire department

The Town of Alabama Volunteer Fire Department has a new chest compression machine that can be used to administer CPR.

ALABAMA, N.Y. — A volunteer fire company in the Genesee County town of Alabama has a new medical device which can help them save lives, they shared.

The addition is a chest compression system that can be used to administer CPR.

The machine gives a precise amount of pressure, at a steady rate to someone experiencing cardiac arrest.

"The chest compressions during CPR are the single-most important and most effective life-saving measure when doing CPR and the Lucas device implements those compressions perfectly to the right depth and the right timing and the right speed to give the patient the upmost chance of life," a spokesperson said.

Firefighters say in certain situations this could allow them to treat others, while the "machine" handles the CPR.

The device was donated by the Woodward family of Oakfield in memory of the late Michael Woodward.
