Flu shot reminder for those who get it

National Influenza Vaccine Week runs from December 4-8.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Erie County Department of Health is reminding people of all ages to protect themselves against the flu this winter season.

Before catching the flu, high risk patients like children, the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions could benefit from the vaccination.

Commissioner of Health, Dr. Gale Burstein, says that the flu vaccine means that you could feel less ill for less time so, it may be worth getting the shot.

"When the flu circulates at high levels in a community you have a very good chance of being exposed – and knocking you down for a week or more," Burstein said.

Dr. Burstein also said that doctors will often hear from patients who are hesitant to get the flu vaccine because ‘there is still a chance of getting sick.’ she says "That sentiment is correct and misleading."

The Erie County Department of Health says that now is the best time to get vaccinated before the flu makes a wider spread but, can still protect even throughout the season.

The most common peak time of infectiousness is in late January or February and can continue on even into May.
