ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is pushing to add warning labels to cleaning products to help protect consumers from potentially harmful products.
The Democrat calls the measure The Consumer Right to Know Act, and it is included in his State of the State book — a broader version of the address he delivered last week in Albany.
Cuomo says products ranging from toothpaste to floor polish can contain known carcinogens and manufacturers have no obligation to disclose that information.
The proposal would extend disclosure requirements from just household cleaning products to all cleaning products sold to individuals and cleaning professionals. Personal care products like shampoo and deodorant would also require labeling.
The proposal is similar to a California law that has been in effect for more than 30 years.
