Western New Yorkers show support for breast cancer patients, survivors

BUFFALO, N.Y. — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and on Saturday morning, people across Western New York walked in support of patients and survivors.

People gathered at Buffalo's Outer Harbor for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, which helps raise awareness and money for research.

"I think it's a great representation of unity and hope, and I think that it's a chance for a brighter future," said Kate Benedict, who walked for her mom.

"I really think that the money will benefit more research, and I feel like it's already benefited because my mom is a survivor. My grandma also had breast cancer, but she wasn't a survivor, so you can tell that the money is being put to a good cause."

Money raised will go to the American Cancer Society, which has invested more than $600 million in breast cancer research since 1993.

Overall, there are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors today in the United States, and that includes people who have completed treatment and people who are still undergoing treatment.

Channel 2 is a proud sponsor of the walk.
